OPR continues its training programme for local authority members

The Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) in conjunction with the Association of Irish Local Government (AILG) is continuing its training programme for elected members of local authorities.

The purpose of the training is to provide elected members with enhanced knowledge of the planning process, reaffirming their roles and responsibilities within the planning system and their functions in relation to ensuring proper planning and sustainable development.

The upcoming module focuses on the plan-making process. This training will provide guidance to elected members on how to work within the regulatory framework and how a wide range of views from statutory consultees, the public and outputs from environmental assessments all contribute to the formulation of policy decisions that are consistent with wider regulatory and policy requirements and that will be robust in the event of legal challenge. The requirements of Ministerial guidelines and directions, Government policy and European environmental directives will be explored in this context.
